Learn Life Skills

There are numerous physical and mental transferable skills that can be taught through finding flow in swimming. Things like learning self-motivation, which leads to increased energy, drive, and focus is one of them (Jackson & Csíkszentmihályi, 1999, p.87).

Physical Skills

By habitually jumping and swimming in cold water, you’ll adapt your body to stress, increasing your physical stress tolerance resulting in a more even temperament and higher stress tolerance in life  (Huttunen, Kokko, & Ylijukuri, 2004, p. 144). Habitually swimming in regular tempered water, increases physical strength, agility, and flexibility,. (Oliveira, et al., 2019, p. 4).

Mental Skills

By accomplishing skills and daily goals you’ll be able to increase your self-confidence. Being able to separate skill failure and personal failure are also major skills in life, that will help you retain a positive self-perception and will motivate you to continue improving yourself (Jackson & Csíkszentmihályi, 1999, p.44). Learning from positive and negative feedback, such as having a more fluid swim after adapting a new technique and swimming in the opposite direction in open water, are all types of feedback that play an important role in learning, so we can improve our skills next time we swim (p. 94).

You will also learn to live a more grounded life creating a more positive outlook and more enjoyable life experience (p. 50). Flow always encourages challenging oneself, so you learn to push yourself out of your comfort zone (p.44).
