Tackling Mental Illnesses

As Jackson and  Csíkszentmihályi (1999) wrote, “ when there is nothing to do, the mind unfocuses and we become depressed” (p.77) . Swimming gives us the mental break we need to maintain our mental health through the flow state.

Being in a flow state also allows you to overcome self-doubt by quieting your thoughts and insecurities as well as focusing your attention solely on the task at hand: swimming (Jackson & Csíkszentmihályi, 1999, p. 54-55).

Swimming and flow teach you to believe in yourself and to increase your self-confidence, since it's literally a sink or swim situation (Jackson & Csíkszentmihályi, 1999, p. 60). Always challenge yourself in a safe environment. Looking back on the accomplishments you’ve made whilst swimming is a great mental boost.

Swimming in itself can be a treatment for mental illnesses (Foley, 2015, p. 222), as well as other physical conditions such as arthritis and rheumatism (Foley, 2015, p. 221).
